Sunsetting Placenote SDK

Hi everyone! Today, I want to share with you some important news about Placenote SDK and our plans for the future.

We launched Placenote in 2018 with the goal of creating the easiest platform to build apps that interact with the real world. Over the last few years, we've seen hundreds of thousands of AR maps created by 10,000 developers who built apps to annotate and navigate indoor spaces.

The landscape of AR and 3D technology has changed a lot in the last 2 years and it's been exciting to see the launch of LiDAR on iOS, Oculus pass-through, as well as new research in deep learning-based 3D mapping and rendering. We think 3D on web and mobile is going to create huge opportunities over the next few years and we have some big news coming up about this over the next few months.

For now, we've made the decision to shut down Placenote SDK in its current form to focus on this new vision. The developer portal will stay active until January 31st and then be discontinued. If you have any questions about the shutdown, please contact us at neil@placenote.com.

And now on to what's next.

Our new product: Dabble

The best way to build a great platform is to first build the killer app on it. For 3D capture, we realized home improvement was that killer app.

Buying furniture during the pandemic was a nightmare. Figuring out if something looks good and fits in your space is hard enough, but it gets way worse when trying to buy multiple products. The best solutions right now are AR visualization apps, but they're limited to stores with 3D models, and they're awkward to use for long periods of time.

Here's our vision for how we'll buy furniture in the future:
Scan your home with your phone, get an editable 3D model that lets you design your space like Sims. Lifelike 3D, easily editable and collaborative. More on this soon!

To start, we wanted to build a design experience that could work across ALL furniture stores, not just ones with 3D models. So we built Dabble as a web app with a Chrome extension, that lets you clip products from anywhere, design your space with them and track your budget automatically. It's like Canva, for interior design! Here's a quick preview.

We're now adding A.I.-assisted creative tools to help anyone become great at interior design, regardless of skill level. Over the next few months, we'll be making more announcements about the technology behind Dabble as well.

We're launching on Product Hunt and need your help

We're launching Dabble on Product Hunt next week! If what I've said so far sounds interesting to you, head over to https://dabble.so and give it a spin. I'll send out another email next week when we're live on Product Hunt and I would be thrilled if you could try Dabble before that and then comment about your experience.

We want to personally say thank you to everyone who has been part of the Placenote community so far. We couldn't have done it without you and I hope you'll support us as we take this next step towards our vision for a more spatial future.

Onwards and Upwards. 🚀
